Project in Focus: "Village Courts" in Bangladesh

In Bangladesh, RJ is an emerging field thanks to the activation of the so-called "Village Courts". This type of courts rely on community participation and focus on a common agreement reached by the conflicting parties. The programme "Activating Village Courts in Bangladesh (AVCB, 2009-2014)", implemented by Local Government Ministry of Bangladesh and funded by the UNDP and the European Commission, supports local community capacities and pertinent institutions in order to activate Village Courts and decrease the pressure of the many pending cases within the traditional criminal justice system. For further information, please contact Sarder Asaduzzaman, a Bangladeshi social justice and RJ practitioner and researcher and the Project Manager of "Activating Village Courts".

Moments of inspiration

Daily restorative circles - In this TED talk, Katy Hutchison tells how her life experience brought her in contact with restorative justice practices. She suggests that social change should start from the education system: "I encourage you, put the desks aside, bring the chairs into a circle, sit together, have a time-in" either at school or in the office or wherever you will be starting your day.

Become a Lake - This Hindu parable gives a suggestion for handling pain. In order to deal with suffering situations, everything should be put into perspective and see the larger picture surrounding it. The amount of pain remains the same, but the the context should help to dissolve it.
